How early to vaccinate before boarding

Quick answer

Most kennels and daycares want vaccinations given at least 7 to 14 days before the stay. Bordetella and canine influenza need time to protect, and some vaccines cause a mild reaction for a day or two. A first-time canine influenza course takes about a month, so book the vet early.

The vaccination is done, the booking is Friday, and the kennel says it is too soon. Here is why, and how much notice to leave.

Why the gap

  • Protection is not instant; it builds over days to weeks.
  • Intranasal Bordetella can cause a short cough or sneeze, which a kennel does not want to see at drop-off.
  • A reaction to any vaccine is better handled at home than in a kennel.

How much notice, by vaccine

VaccineTypical minimum before a stayNote
Bordetella7 daysSome kennels ask for 14; injectable first course is two doses.
Canine influenzaAbout 2 weeks after the second doseFirst course is two doses 2–4 weeks apart: roughly a month in total.
DHPP booster7–14 daysPuppies must usually have finished the series.
RabiesOften no minimum if a booster; varies for a first doseMust be current on the day.
FVRCP (cats)7–14 days

The practical rule

Check the kennel’s policy when you book, then book the vet at least two weeks before the stay, a month if canine influenza is required and not started. Better still, set a reminder a month before each booster is due so the question never comes up.
