The usual list
| Vaccine | Why kennels want it | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Rabies | Required by law almost everywhere; the kennel is checking for you and for its license. | Every 1 or 3 years by product and state |
| DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) | Parvo and distemper spread in shared spaces and are serious. | Every 3 years after the puppy series and first booster |
| Bordetella (kennel cough) | Airborne, highly contagious among dogs in one building. | Every 12 months; some kennels every 6 |
| Canine influenza (H3N2/H3N8) | Increasingly required after outbreaks; spreads like Bordetella. | Every 12 months after a two-dose start |
| Leptospirosis | Required by some kennels, especially in wet regions. | Every 12 months |
Timing
Most kennels want vaccinations given at least 7 to 14 days before the stay. Bordetella needs a few days to protect and can cause a mild cough in the days after, which the kennel does not want to see at drop-off. Ask when you book; "the morning of" is rarely accepted.
What counts as proof
The rabies certificate and the clinic’s vaccination record showing each product and date. A tag alone does not count. A clear photo is fine for most kennels; some ask the clinic to email it directly.
Other things they may ask for
- A negative fecal test within the last 6 to 12 months.
- Flea and tick prevention that is current.
- Spay or neuter status for dogs over a certain age.
- Medication instructions, written down.
Common questions
- My dog had Bordetella six months ago. Is that enough?
- For most kennels yes, if the product was annual. Some require it every six months; check their policy before booking.
