How to get a copy of your pet’s rabies certificate

Quick answer

Call or email the vet clinic that gave the rabies vaccination and ask for a copy of the certificate. Clinics keep the record and most can email a reprint the same day, often free. If that clinic has closed, the practice that took over its records, or your county licensing office, can usually help.

The kennel wants the rabies certificate and the folder is nowhere. The good news is that the certificate is a copy of a record the clinic still holds.

The clinic that gave the shot

Every rabies vaccination is recorded with the product, lot number, date and the vet’s license. Ask the clinic for "a copy of the rabies certificate" and give them the pet’s name, your name, and roughly when it was done. The tag number on the collar helps them find it fast.

If you are not sure which clinic

The tag usually has the clinic’s name or a phone number stamped on it, or the issuing county. A bank or card statement from around the vaccination date will name the clinic too.

If the clinic has closed

Records transfer to the buyer or a custodian; the state veterinary board knows where. Our guide to a closed vet has the steps. Your county or city may also hold a copy if you licensed the pet.

What the copy must show

The same details as the original: the animal, the vaccine and lot, the date given and next due, and the vet’s name, license and signature. See what is a rabies certificate.
